RICHMOND FLYING SQUIRRELS
Every year the Richmond Flying Squirrels honors the Richmond 34, the group of 34 Virginia Union University students who bravely staged a sit-in at the segregated counter of Thalimers Department Store in 1960, and became one of the first mass-arrests of the Civil Rights Movement.
In 2026, the Squirrels unveiled a new, permanent monument to the Richmond 34 at CarMax Park. The uniforms worn on Richmond 34 night at the ballpark features an emblem on the sleeve representing this monument. The overall design is inspired by jerseys worn in the negro leagues, and uses VUU colors in the wordmark as an additional homage to the original members of the Richmond 34.
